The shadow of food
On a lark, we decided to go to Soup Plantation for dinner. No, really. We hadn’t been in years and I couldn’t remember why. The lovely and talented wife had been getting recommendations to go. In hindsight, it’s obvious my subconscious had driven the memory from my mind in an attempt to protect me. My reptilian brain was screaming “Danger!” but I wasn’t listening. Having no other plans, we went.
It was a noisy, bewildering spectacle. Being greeted at the door by the sight of dozens of people lined up at what amount to gigantic, lettuce-filled feeding troughs was surreal. And I’ve never seen so many people crammed into such a small area running frantically from one buffet station to the next to score their next batch of imitation food. Well, maybe that’s a little harsh. The food wasn’t bad per se. I can only describe it as what I imagine food must have tasted like in The Matrix – computer-generated memories of food.
On the plus side: good cheese-toast and kids 3 to 5 eat for $1.49.
We will most likely not be returning. If that makes me a snob, I’m okay with that.
