The best deal in Lego

Lego wheels Handy Box (800 assorted bricks): $15

Small wheels and axles (24 wheels/12 axles in 3 sizes): $8

Extra large grey base plate: $10

I bought this setup for my son a couple of weeks ago and he absolutely loves it. It’s great because it comes with so many pieces and it’s a building set rather than a model so it doesn’t matter if you lose a few pieces here and there. I’m about to buy another Handy Box and I think I’ll upgrade to a bigger set of wheels (72 sets of wheels and axles) (pictured above) for $34.

And have you seen Lego Factory? It’s the most awesome thing in Legos since Legos were invented.

Your son is so my own son when he was 4 (he’s now 21, and is at davidcomeaux.com). Anyway, concerning toys, did you already have TinkerToys? My son and I liked ’em so much we had to have two or three big sets going at once. Sure, these days Tinker Toys are plastic, but they are so big and colorful. And you don’t lose the pieces so quickly like Legos.

He’s always wanting to build one more truck/car/thing-with-wheels, but there just are not enough wheels & axles in any other set. We visited LegoLand this summer, but I wasn’t going to tote around a couple pounds of Legos for the better part of a day. Naturally, we forgot on our way out the gate. Thanks for the tip !

LEGO should always be written in uppercase and should only be used as an adjective as in LEGO bricks, LEGO set etc. But I will be happy if you just stop using the word legos. Otherwise, keep up the good work. ‘Oh to be as perfect as I want everyone else to be’

Of course, it was a basic set with a couple of base plates and the standard blocks. They didn’t have all the little people and intricate pieces like they have now. Nevertheless, I had many years of fun creating with my Legos. I think the fanciest thing in the set were wheels with removable rubber tires that could be used to create cars. The wheel would snap into special bricks which had little holes to accommodate the axle protruding from the wheel. When I was older, my parents bought me a set that had interlocking gears that would actually mesh together and turn. It was such fun. Thanks for bringing me back to my childhood with this post, John. ;)

But we’ve started adding boxes as you point out, to the melee that is LEGO bricks. They will play for hours - and their styles are so different too. One goes only for the higher difficulty pieces (model set bits, gears, the old R2D2 robot…) while the other makes anything resembling a weapon, or something with many weapons. But it’s all fun and games until there’s little LEGO pieces spread all over the house and A) you step on one with a barefoot, or B) worse, one gets eaten by the vaccuum…

You are “upgrading” his legos because you want to build bigger stuff. I use the same rationale when buying new Playstation games for my kids.

My parents also started of with models, but quickly stepped over to boxes, because 1: indeed it doesn’t matter if you lose a brick, and 2: you can build anything you want. Pity it became so expense over the years (the models), but it remains the best toy ever! Glenndavid

But it’s called Lego Creator. Soo fun! You should try to look for that. I know your son, and even your daughter would love it.
