Scrapbooking, part 3
I’ve written two previous entries (Part 1, Part 2) about my experience creating a photo book with Shutterfly and MyPublisher. I chose Shutterfly for various reasons which you can read about in the previous posts and I’ve received the books. My review follows.
I ordered five copies of the book Wednesday. I recieved an email from Shutterfly Thursday night telling me my books were printed and ready to ship. On Monday, all of the books had arrived at their destinations on both coasts (North Carolina and California)! The books arrived in perfect shape. Shutterfly packaged them carefully for shipment. Each one was enclosed in its own resealable plastic bag which was held inside a cardboard insert which was inside the shipping box.
The book itself looks very nice. It is a genuine hardcover book with a real hardcover binding. I ordered the suede cover which is somewhat soft to the touch and very sturdy. The binding is decent and doesn’t feel flimsy. I was prepared for the book to feel cheap; but overall the finish is extremely nice. While the book isn’t substantial (it’s only 32 pages), it is a high-quality product. You never feel as though you should handle the book gingerly for fear of it falling apart. Shutterfly’s books come with a cutout in the front cover that lets you see the image on the first page. I think this is much more impressive than MyPublisher’s method of just slapping a photo onto the cover.
The inside of the cover is black and a black page separates the cover from the first and last pages. The layout of the images and captions on each page looked exactly as they did in the book designer. The captions are crisp and easy to read. The quality of the images is very good but not as good as Shutterfly’s photo prints. The printing process for the books must be different than for their photos. [Update Jan 13, 2005: Bill says they use a halftone process (like a magazine)] The paper is also not quite as heavy as a photo print but is much heavier than standard printer paper. The paper is thick enough that you can’t see images on the opposite side of the page showing through and feels substantial. Color was mostly very accurate although it might have been slightly oversaturated in some cases.
Overall, I’m impressed. It’s a great value for the price and the finished book is of excellent quality. It’s something you can be proud to show to friends and family when they come over for a visit. They also make great gifts — my grandmother sent the most excited email I’ve seen from her in months on the day she received it.

I ordered a $60 photobook and am somewhat disappointed with the results (now that I finally received it!!). They mypublisher software does some sort of hideous conversion on all the images, so the images printed in the book are nothing close to photo quality. in addition, I ordered specifically several “full bleeds” and the images were still cropped. I will try Shutterfly based on the recommendations here and my positive expereinces on the photo side with them. Does anyone else know of a solid photobook publisher? I know the default Mac publisher of books from iPhoto is MyPublisher. Who does Adobe Elements use?? PS: the MyPublisher software is the worst POS I have ever used. Poor saving options, and very buggy and not well thought-out features/options/commands. Brutal.

April on 2004-12-22 11:35:54 wrote: I was creating a photobook for my brother for Christmas for a vacation that we took together earlier this year. Shutterfly’s site says you can have 100 pages and up to 6 pictures per page but as I found out in making my book, they have a problem with their site where you can’t have more than 250 pages in your book. They have a work around to this which I used once to add more pictures but then I still needed to add more (as I was making a 100 page book). When I called back to get assistance again I found out that the work around only works once (which they didn’t tell me the first time) and I was not able to add anymore pictures. As you can imagine I’m pretty upset about it because I spent a lot of time making the book and I’m not able to finish it unless I want to leave off the last city we visited. This is a problem they have known about since they starting offering their photobooks. I told them they needed to update their website to indicate this limitation as its current state is false advertising. Hopefully they will do so. Just wanted to forewarn you so you don’t waste your time like me. I have ordered prints from them before and the quality was very good. I appreciate your comments about the other offerings as I’m currently looking for an alternative to shutterfly.

I won’t bore you with my experience - which is still ongoing as of Dec 22. Suffice it to say that it encompasses unanswered technical emails (the Dec 3rd email remains unanswered), an order successfully submitted on December 9th (their site proclaims a 4-DAY turnaround), and as of Dec 22, no books - which probably means a late Christmas present. Instead of hearing and seeing someone open a wonderful gift ON Christmas, I guess I’ll have to be satisfied at giving it a few days, or weeks late. And as for customer service? Forget it … mypublisher does not understand what that means. IF you are VERY LUCKY and PERSISTENT, you can google out the phone number for their office in Valhalla NY. Play around with the phone features to get transferred to someone - anyone. And maybe you’ll get a real person! Thing is, they still won’t help you. Right now, with me, they’re trying a variation of “the check’s in the mail.” Of course, every other vendor on the East Coast has managed to get my gifts to me, here in CA, on time. And having read numerous other posts here and on other sites, it’s pretty clear who the culprit is here. I’ll try Shutterfly next time - no matter how frustrating their product is, I have to do SOMETHING to help make sure that mypubisher never gets another cent of my $

Bill O on 2005-01-13 08:16:18 wrote: I just got my first Shutterfly PhotoBook. I liked everything except the quality of the photos. Although I don’t see that they advertise this anywhere, Shutterfly uses a halftone process (like a magazine) instead of a photographic process to print the pages. The result is undersaturated, slightly darkened, grainy/noisy/pixelated images.

Ofoto’s interface is not as good as mypublisher because you are doing it on the site and it’s slow. I’m not sure about Shutterfly and Ofoto comparisons— I’m also looking for a new photo sharing source– one that lets other people download the photos if they want (ofoto and shutterfly don’t allow that). Happy Pictures everyone!

I was trying to decide whether to go for MyPublisher or shutterfly because I like the fact MyPublisher has so many layouts. but, after reading this, I guess shutterfly may be the easier way to go. I agree with some of the commenters that shutterfly sample pics are good, but not excellent. some of my pictures did come with too much green/yellow, or were over-saturated. however, I must remind myself these are just snap photos and not ‘fine’ photography. also, printing process for digital is not yet quite up to par with traditional film development, so we can’t expect digital photos from these places to always be excellent. thanks for everyone’s comments, it’s been really helpful!

The only downfalls I have found is that if you have a photo that takes up the whole page, some of the photo gets stuck to the other side of the page. Also, after about 40 people viewing my book, the pages have fallen apart. I wonder if hard bound books do the same. I wouldn’t want to pay $40.00 or more for a book to fall apart. Can anyone tell me if the have had a problem with Shutterfly’s binding quality? I use Shutterfly to email photos to friend and family. Please reply at [email protected]…just type in Mypublisher in the subject so I don’t delete the email. Thanks. Terese

I did not really use their templates, I laid my book out in photoshop and laid them in to full pages. worked out nice. For $10.00 plus $5.00 shipping a nice 20 page paperback book with up to 80 pictures arrives in the mail about a week after being uploaded. After placing an order a 20% discount is available on a subsequent order if an email recommendation is sent. I like the quality, the ability to add text to tell a story, and the flexibility of arranging photos in various ways, including from one to four photos per page. Different formats are available - photos only, photos with captions or photos with text.

They reprinted it put a new cover on it and sent it back within a week. They said the problem was I never chose the leather cover, I’m not sure I believe that or not, I went with that type of book because they do not offer leather in the larger book. I have no way of proving I did not choose leather though since it is done through their upload system. They told me the would print another book for me at half price, I had to pay full price via credit card and they would credit the other half back with in 2 weeks. I’ll keep you posted. Book looked decent, something weird is going on in the shadowed areas of the prints though, looks a little noisey, maybe it is a conversion problem. The book is a reat deal for the price.

I had a 50% off discount, so the price was right. The photo quality is excellent, but I worked with the photos quite a bit in Photoshop before selecting them for the album. There are some quirky things in the program that are more annoyances for someone who works with computer applications alot. Two odd formatting changes from what I had in my layout and the final layout - not a big deal. I like the feature that lets you know if the resolution of a photo is too low for the size picture you have selected. I had from one to four pictures per page with captions, and it looks professional. I like that you work on it on your own computer and not on line. I’m planning to do another one with a 50% off discount that expires October 31st, and my daughter is doing one of her honeymoon. I may try one of the other vendors just to compare.

Putting the book together was easy, kind of like creating a sophisticated Powerpoint presentation; I have a few niggles with the layout process, but nothing that would stop me using the package. I tried a paperback book first as it was the cheapest option, it came back within a week, but there were 3 pages with a bleed from another book at the top, only by about 1mm or so, but still, as far as I’m concerned, unacceptable. I e-mailed MyPublisher late Saturday evening and told them of the problem, I had a reply within 1 hour telling me to upload the book again and they’d credit me for the original copy… no questions asked, no BS! The new book came back flawless the following Wednesday. I have since created and ordered 2 Classic, linen covered, Hardback books of weddings I photographed for friends; they were blown away by the results, having never seen these kinds of Coffee Table books before. I am now working on a 4th book, a portfolio of my own work. I’m currently trying to resolve a minor issue with the laying out of full bleed pages that contain text at the edges, but given the ease of use of the software, the customer support that I have received so far - it’s been exemplary - the quality of the finished products, and the cost, I would say that MyPublisher has a pretty amazing product.

After being handled by no more than 10 people in one afternoon, it was apparent that the binding was flaky as pages began falling out. Who cares if the paper is of archival quality if the book itself won’t even last a day (literally)? I sent an e-mail to “[email protected]” and received a prompt reply that my credit card would be credited within 2-4 weeks, and that I was free to try again. At this time, I’m wondering if I shouldn’t move on to another printer, or if I should give the hardcover a shot.

Several of those orders were cancelled after they chose to make the discount code invalid, and the orders which were not cancelled took much longer to process b/c of the overload of business. None of this excuses the lack of customer service (all customers should have received emails informing them of order cancellation/delay/etc), but at least it might indicate that it was a one time problem rather than a continuing business practice.

Judy on 2006-02-22 14:36:29 wrote: I’ve never complained on an open forum like this, but I am mad as a hornet at MyPublisher. I am not a beginner at this photobook stuff and proceeded with ease at putting together and formatting my book with their software, never having the need to consult with the Help information. I previewed my book carefully, was happy with it, and sent in my order (their buy-one-get-one-free promotion was what sent me from shutterfly). When the book arrived, it had a blank page behind the cover page, which I had not expected and which messed up the rest of my formatting. The blank page NEVER showed up on any of the final review options. Customer service said it is “standard publishing” formatting for the back of a cover page to be blank and that the Help information clearly says a blank page always appears behind the cover page. They claim user error, even when I told them the blank page never shows on the final preview and I had no way of knowing about the blank page unless I read all the fine print in the Help section, which I didn’t feel like I needed. Why can’t they show this blank page on their preview? They never answered that question. They just say there is no way to eliminate it. They offered me 50% rebate to rework the book, but won’t honor the buy-one-get-one-free deal. So I’m back with the same deal I had at the beginning and 2 books for the trash. I should also mention that alsmot all of the photos appeared much darker in the book than should be. Their customer service was timely with their unsatisfactory, rote, “non” responses. I’m sticking with shutterfly.

Natalie J. on 2006-02-27 20:28:59 wrote: I have had a horrible. horrible experience with MyPublisher. I have used this software in the past to make smaller, 20 page books (3 of them) with no problem. However, in November, I began work on a 100 page photo album for my in-laws (of their grandchildren). As the book got larger and larger, the program started to have many problems. It LOST my book four times and had to start from scratch. I would save, shutdown and go to open up the program again a day or so later and there simply would be no record of my book. After the fourth time I built the book, as I was looking over the final copy before submitting it, I selected the view all pages option. At this point I got an error messages stating that the program failed to upload my photos (saying it return too few scanned lines). So - it froze up and I had to reboot. When I rebooted, it still had my book (improvement from the first three times) but only about 25 pages worth of photos (The middle 25) all the other pages were blank. All of my work down the drain. I didn’t get the book done in time for Christmas and actually got a new laptop for Chrsitmas and installed the new version of MyPublisher onto it. I had numerous technical problems (too many to explain) and my book was lost many times. I even exported the books and saved them to cds as is recommended in the help section. However when I went to import these books it simply said “failed to creat new book files” and wouldn’t import my books. I am very familiar with computers and have used them in my line of work for 15 years. My husband is a software engineer. Neither of us could see any reason on our end why we were having so many difficulties. I sent about 4 emails throught the four months I spent working on this book (I know I should have switched to another publisher, but by Christmas time, my in-laws were expecting a 100 pg book with tons of photos - hard to find that with other publishers). two of the emails were answered nicely, the third was answered by someone who didn’t even address my question and told me to take a step which I clearly stated in my email I had already taken. It was obvious he hadn’t read much of my email and didn’t want to take the time to help me. I sent a fourth email asking if there was a supervisor or manager who could review my case and possibly extend the buy 1 get one free promotion a few days past the Feb 28th deadline for me in light of all the horrendous technical problems. They never answered. I actually did finish my book, after 4 months and about 95 hours spent on it. At the end, it did the whole “Failed to upload photos - too few scanned lines” thing again (despite the new computer and new version of software). However, I was able to import my latest saved version (by some act of God) and have sent it off for publication at the price of $315 ( 100 pages of the Delux book.) We’ll see how it comes back. I’m not expecting a whole lot…. I will never, ever agin use this program.

Now I save it every chance I get but even then sometimes the saves get lost when the program crashes. I had to save it, make a copy of it, and then continue working. I saved so many times that I’m not sure if the photos will still be clear when they’re published. As they’re JPEGS as most photos are, each time you save it, the photo quality degrades slightly. Usually it won’t matter, but I’m saving it so much that I’m beginning to see the photos become slightly blurry. They either have to fix the stability problems with the software or how it manages photos. If they don’t, expect to have to spend a few hours (let’s say five) to do it once, then possibly repeat the process another five times before it actually works. And make sure you’re not using a flaky wireless connection to upload these pictures. It’s a fairly large upload and it seems to upload everything at once. Maybe because Shutterfly uploads the pictures one at a time, it’s more stable and if there’s a problem, you don’t lose all the pictures you’ve uploaded. (But I admit it’s comparing apples and oranges as putting the book together happens online on Shutterfly instead of on your computer). Still, it’s just a frustrating experience and I’m not sure of the quality of the photos until I see it. Hopefully they’ll be OK.

I lowered my firewall level to low and even added mypublisher website as a trusted site to my Internet Explorer. Does anyone else have this problem?

First off, as I also learned from other forums, their software obviously has problems. Secondly, I am completely done with companies who do not value the customer. Without us, they are nothing and no one should put up with nor support a company that does not understand this basic principle. Say “no” to poor customer service and go elsewhere!

My first order was for 2 photbooks and shortly after placing the order they sent me a code for a free 8 x 8 memory photobook. Also I had a small problem on my first order that was actually my fault and they offered to reprint the book at no charge.

Everyone time I pick a picture on Shutterfly to take up the whole page - I zoom in and it looks blurry.. Will it be blurry in the final product? I need some advice! I love using Shutterfly so far - but haven’t purchased anything yet!
