Bath time

It’s 8:10 PM and I’m pondering my next move.

Our son has gone to extreme lengths to avoid taking a bath tonight. First he tried a simple ploy:

Me: Sounds like your sister is done with her bath. Your turn.
Son: Uh, I think I still hear water running, Dad.

Next, he told me that he would take a quick shower. This bit of subterfuge actually worked. It gave him just enough time to make a break for his room. From there things got much more serious. As I approached his doorway he told me that only he and his sister were allowed in his room. It was off-limits to grown ups.

For a few seconds he thought that would settle the matter. He wasn’t coming out and I wasn’t allowed in. He sat on his bed smugly satisfied with a stalemate that would assure his future dryness. But as I continued forward, for good measure, he used a small, invisible device concealed in the palm of his hand to erect a force-field at the doorway.

He was astonished when I made it through that. Even I thought I was unstoppable. “Dad, no!” On the verge of panic, backed up against the bed, he had a flash of inspiration. He grabbed an invisible saw and cut a hole in the floor beneath my feet.

He even made little sawing noises.

He was serious.

It’s 8:19 PM now. I’ve got an idea. I’m going back in.
