A bed of her own
Have I mentioned before that my lovely and talented wife is the arty type? Theater? Fashion? Dancer? First reactions are usually that there isn’t much in common between a person who likes those things and a person like me who enjoys programming computers. But that’s usually because people who have that reaction don’t know much about programming computers. They don’t know how much of a creative process it is. Or they think that computer programmers are nerds and everyone knows nerds don’t like art. We’ve been married for eight years and I’ve known her for 15. But I digress.
My lovely and talented wife is the arty type. And she’s flown to New York to perform in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. There wasn’t much to talk about. Once in a lifetime opportunity, free trip to New York, paid to perform in front of millions of people on Broadway. It’s a small role but what an experience! Of course she had to go. The kids are looking forward to seeing her on television Thursday morning. They miss their mama but talking to her on the phone closed the distance to New York immeasurably.
So I’m sitting here listening to Bjork and Warren Zevon and the All Girl Summer Fun Band, The Cars and The Hives and wondering what she’s doing. This will be the first time either of us has soloed with the kids for more than a day. But no big deal. This is just me being daddy. Besides, after you’ve been peed on, dealt with a tantrum in the supermarket, changed several thousand diapers, and caught someone else’s vomit in your bare hands at 3am… well, you can deal with anything.
She’s probably sleeping.
I wonder how she’ll sleep without two kids hogging the bed and a husband stealing the covers.
