I had an office job for two years. It was a really liberal office, no dress code, beer on Fridays, but even there I felt like I was being baby sat. By the time I was done there I was in charge of a team that oversaw millions of dollars in inventory and that had increased customer retention by 60%. I was still reprimanded for being late back from lunch, denied leave to put my fiancee into rehab and, despite the fact that time of day had no bearing whatsoever on my job, not allowed to create a flexible schedule so I could complete my degree.

I've been self employed for three years and I am happier, more productive and wealthier than ever. I don't know why everyone doesn't do it.

Oh, I've had some good jobs. My last employer was about as good as they get. You're young (23) and I'm surmising from your "about me" page that you're at your first job out of school. When I was that age I used to think I had it pretty good, too. Let me know what you think in 5 years. :-)

Wow, this sounds like you made some really awful experiences in your working life. I just wanted to chime in to say that not all companies are like this. So, if you're interested: learn German, move here and start working at my company. ;) We are hiring like mad at the moment, anyhow. And it's an awesome place to work at.
