I preferred the big G, personally, but I can't really say why. Maybe I'm afraid of change.

I totally noticed. I think it looks nicer. However, I don't actually remember the old favicon, I just knew it looked different.

Search Engine Land has an official position from Google:
“We recognized there was a need for a Google icon that would better work across multiple applications including web, mobile and client applications. We felt the small ‘g’ had many of the characteristics that best represent our brand: it’s simple, playful, and unique. We will be looking to improve and enhance this icon as we move forward.“

did notice that, but had not given it thought. i like sue's suggestion about the infinity sign. i wonder too if there is some attempt to avoid the idea of "big" and "big brother" watching?

Interesting. I don’t associate large “G” or small “g” with Google. Whether I see Google or google, I think of the Google website. When I type it into the Address Bar, I type google.com, but that’s just because I’m too lazy to capitalize it.

The word “google” no longer has any meaning to me. I’ve said it too much today.

Possibly because the little "g" comes closest to approximating the infinity sign turned on its side?
