Little “g”

Did you notice that Google changed their favicon (that little icon that shows up in your address bar) from a big “G” to a little “g”? I think someone in Google marketing thinks more people associate the little “g” with Google than the big version. They may be right. For a long time both of my kids called any lowercase letter “g” they saw a “google.”

Was it you who shared that google was a play on the word googal which is the number 1 followed by 100 zeros? I know I heard it somewhere.

  2. Sue says:

Possibly because the little “g” comes closest to approximating the infinity sign turned on its side?

Interesting. I don’t associate large “G” or small “g” with Google. Whether I see Google or google, I think of the Google website. When I type it into the Address Bar, I type google.com, but that’s just because I’m too lazy to capitalize it.

The word “google” no longer has any meaning to me. I’ve said it too much today.

Google google google google. Say that ten times, fast.

did notice that, but had not given it thought. i like sue’s suggestion about the infinity sign. i wonder too if there is some attempt to avoid the idea of “big” and “big brother” watching?

Search Engine Land has an official position from Google:
“We recognized there was a need for a Google icon that would better work across multiple applications including web, mobile and client applications. We felt the small ‘g’ had many of the characteristics that best represent our brand: it’s simple, playful, and unique. We will be looking to improve and enhance this icon as we move forward.“

I totally noticed. I think it looks nicer. However, I don’t actually remember the old favicon, I just knew it looked different.

I preferred the big G, personally, but I can’t really say why. Maybe I’m afraid of change.
