Review: The Good Shepherd

May 16th, 2007

An interesting examination of Edward Wilson’s (Matt Damon) life and the role he played in the origins of the CIA. Closer to 10 on the realism scale than I’d like. It’s a mumble movie and Matt Damon, although he’s the star, has about two lines—we had to watch it with the subtitles on. I thought [...]

I guess I’m the straight man in this duo

Daughter: We saw an opera at our school. The doctor was funny. Me: Oh? That sounds like fun. Daughter: The barber was saying something and then the doctor scared him. Me: A doctor and a barber… was the opera in a town? Daughter: No, it wasn’t a town. Me: It sounds like it was. Was [...]

Screen time tickets

We printed out a bunch of these and started using them this week. Blue for the boy and pink for the girl. So far they’ve taken to them and they’ve already realized they can pool their resources to make them last longer. We’ll see how things go. I’m anticipating they’ll have to start rationing around [...]

A quiet, beautiful moment

We come in from the garage. He climbs the stool as I stand beside him at the sink. The water runs, washing grease and grime away. For a few moments, the only sounds are light breathing and running water falling on porcelain. A distant train whistle blows. I wrap my hands around his to help [...]

Review: Children of Men

May 6th, 2007

We watched it the Saturday night before Easter, and while it’s not your typical Easter fable, it’s ultimately about the same thing: hope. It’s also a realistic and graphic action movie in which the action isn’t gratuitous and the reluctant hero is only heroic (at least initially) through indifference and circumstance. Highly recommended. Children of [...]

Lunch, moth, Oreos, noodles

May 4th, 2007

Son: Today after lunch I saw a moth and Mom said it was a moth and I tried to scare it away but it didn’t go away and I looked for some Oreo’s… *takes a deep breath* Son: …but we’re out. Me: Bummer. Son: Are the noodles ready?

Review: Stranger Than Fiction

May 3rd, 2007

Quirky in a safe way. Features the adorable Maggie Gyllenhaal and the not as adorable but funny Will Ferrell. Comparisons have been made to Adaptation but I haven’t seen it yet. Very enjoyable. Even more than usual, skip the “extras” on the DVD. Stranger Than Fiction (Netflix)
