Me and Cookie Monster, that’s how we roll

February 26th, 2006

I answered the phone today to hear a very young girl on the line. She immediately went into a script to tell me that I had ordered four boxes of Girl Scout cookies, that I owed her $16, and that she would be coming by today to deliver them. It was all so professional I [...]

Breakfast negotiations with 5-year-olds

February 23rd, 2006

Daughter: Let’s eat breakfast. Me: Ok. Let me just take a shower first then we’ll go downstairs and have breakfast. Daughter: Um. I have an idea. Let’s eat breakfast first and then you can take a shower. Pause. Me: Ooook. Fine. I’ll just go potty first. Yes, I actually said that. Me, after returning: Ok, [...]

BloggingBaby.com

February 22nd, 2006

So, I’ve started posting over at BloggingBaby.com. As the name suggests, BloggingBaby is about raising kids. It’s a good blog written by a team of thoughtful and dedicated moms and dads. I’m going to try and contribute one or two pieces a day over there. I hope you’ll stop by. I will continue posting here, [...]

That fetus is 17?

February 21st, 2006

Almost nothing makes me feel older than the phrase “class of 2007.” We saw it on a sweatshirt yesterday. How can someone born in 1989 be 17 years old? 1989, people! And normally I don’t feel old at all. I feel the same as I did when I was 17. I mean, I feel smarter, [...]

Another melancholy milestone: the two-wheeler

February 18th, 2006

She was on training wheels for all of a week. She became confident at riding and turning on her own very quickly. And now she has attained complete mastery of her bike, having recently gained the ability and confidence to stop and start on her own. I was overjoyed when she flashed her smile at [...]

Feedburner Plugin for WordPress 2.0

February 18th, 2006

I’ve written a new plugin that redirects the main feed and optionally the comments feed to Feedburner.com. Notable differences from similar plugins: It does this without the need to modify templates, setup new hidden feeds, modify .htaccess files, or asking users to migrate to a new feed. It works with IIS and Apache. All existing [...]

Site update: Feedburner

February 17th, 2006

I’ve just switched over the main feed for this site to Feedburner. Feedburner basically gives you readership numbers for a feed to complement traditional visit/pageview analysis. So far: wow. There are a lot more of you than I thought there were. Thank you for reading. You shouldn’t notice anything different and there’s nothing you need [...]

Tooth update: it’s loose

February 15th, 2006

Elation: palpable. Mention her loose tooth and she beams, she bounces. I remember having loose teeth; but I don’t remember it being so gross. When she says, “Look, Dad!” and wiggles her tooth, my skin crawls. It’s been several days since she first noticed it and she constantly wiggles it or asks someone else to [...]

Truths of parenting

February 13th, 2006

No matter how hard you try you will never convince a 3-year old boy that showing you the half-chewed food in his mouth is not funny.
